Description/Reviews:

Osada Vida, one of the most interesting Polish bands on the prog-metal scene, return with a brand new album. " The After-Effect " is their first release after the line-up change in early 2014, when Jan Mitoraj and Marek Romanowski joined the band. Their highly acclaimed previous album "Particles" made the band work even harder on the follow-up material. Łukasz Lisiak comments on the changes and their impact on the new album: "I think, the new album is a continuation of a certain road, the album 'Particles' being its last stop. Certainly, the approach to composing used on the album 'Particles' was also used while writing songs for the new album - the structure of songs is more simple, as we were trying to avoid excessive complexity. We are using Marek Majewski's talent as much as possible, so finally we no longer have to hide or shorten the vocal parts. At the same time, however, we are still amusing ourselves with all those little twisted, very atmospheric parts known from our previous releases.” The new album brings surprises. One of them is a guest appearance of a string quartet.

Description/Review

Well, Tellurian is a nine songs long record and it’s meant to pick up from where Cognitive left us but also to refine Soen’s sound each step of the way.
We are exposed to a lot of South American musical influences and to the prowess of each band member as they reunite under unbelievable harmonic and cohesive colors, and although we still long to hearing DiGiorgio’s undeniable artistic slap and finger-plucked fretless bass, Stefan Stenberg, his replacer, fills up DiGiorgio’s shoes in a more than decent manner.

Rhys Marsh "Sentiment"

Afbeelding

Country: Norway
Sub Genre: Progressive Rock
Label: Autumnsongs Records
Format: CD (mini-lp style double gatefold sleeve) & digital
Release date: November 10, 2014

Tracklist:
1. Calling In The Night [3:25]
2. Burn The Brightest Day [3:29]
3. Pictures Of Ashes [3:50]
4. The Seventh Face [4:49]
5. The Ghost Ship [6:11]
6. In The Sand [3:49]
7. Last November [5:07]
8. Silver Light & Blackened Eyes [5:30]
9. Give Me (What You Need) [5:23]

Line-up:
Rhys Marsh (The Autumn Ghost, Opium Cartel, Kaukasus) - everything

Description/Reviews:

‘Sentiment’ is a journey into the darker side of the soul, both musically & lyrically, and is by far the most personal statement that Marsh has produced. Sonically & texturally, this is a dense album, full of thick atmospheres & intense dynamics, with songs that will grip you and keep you on the edge of your seat.
Following the success of Kaukasus’ debut album earlier this year, Marsh has continued down the same road, mood-wise, but brought the dark atmospheres into a more song-based setting — combining a similar intensity with more classic structures, leading to captivating & striking results.
From the outset, the urgency of 'Sentiment' breaks through the speakers with the first alarm-like chords of 'Calling In The Night', which will fight for your attention, and most likely win. The intensity runs straight through into the furiously-paced 'Burn The Brightest Day', the folk-noir tones of 'Pictures Of Ashes', and the ominous electronica-edged 'The Seventh Face'. It's only when we reach 'The Ghost Ship' that we're allowed a moment to reflect — the melancholy taking the forefront, giving us some room to breathe. It's here that most Autumn Ghost fans will find comfort, but that comfort doesn't last for long...
The grandiose 'In The Sand' sets off the second half, its sonic beauty hiding a much darker lyrical theme. 'Last November' begins as a catchy, upbeat number, before taking a turn, leading us straight back into the maelstrom of harmonic chaos. The final two songs descend into the heaviest and darkest sounds that Marsh has released to date — 'Silver Light & Blackened Eyes', with its nightmarish chromatic patterns, and 'Give Me (What You Need)', which pushes further and further towards the sun, before burning out in a wall of distortion and feedback.
The feeling of 'Sentiment' is urgent and intense. There's nowhere to hide in this music, wrapped in fuzz guitars, imposing bass synth, merciless rhythms and dissonant colourings. Its abrasive textures and unexpected turns — mixed with the contrast of Marsh’s trademark beautiful melodies, twisted here to a new dimension — will keep the comfort levels to the minimum.

Description/Reviews:

The freakish debut album by Schizoid Lloyd - a Dutch progressive metal unit whose incredible musical hodgepodge of interests shine through within moments of the 57-minute release – effortlessly hopping from Queen-fueled vocal harmonies to Mr. Bungle lounging to Leprous progression to short outbursts of lunar insanity and even a dash of singer-songwriter sensitivity and white boy rap (when required). Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart would be very, very proud.

4. The Last Rays

Line-up:
Takaakira "Taka" Goto - guitar
Tamaki - bass, piano
Yoda - guitar
Yasunori Takada - drums
With
Tetsu Fukagawa

Description/Reviews:

The Last Dawn and Rays of Darkness are a pair of new albums by MONO. Recorded simultaneously yet conceptually and creatively disparate, the two act as both opposing and complementary sides to a story. No strangers to narratives, the twin albums explore familiar themes for the band: Hope and hopelessness, love and loss, immense joy and unspeakable pain. Those elemental parts of life and the complicated relationships they create have never been more resonant through MONO's music than they are here.

Rays of Darkness is the first MONO album in 15 years to feature no orchestral instruments whatsoever. That fact alone is remarkable given the band's reputation for sweeping, dramatic instrumentals that recall Oscar-worthy film scores. Instead, Rays of Darkness more closely resembles a jet engine taking off inside a small, crowded auditorium. It is MONO's blackest album ever, a collection of scorched riffs, doom rhythms, and an unexpected contribution from post-hardcore pioneer Tetsu Fukagawa of Envy. The album ends with the smoldering wreckage of distorted guitars and ominous drones playing out a eulogy to the days when MONO shot blinding rays of light through seemingly endless darkness.

The Last Dawn is the first of these two companion albums, and is the "lighter" of the two, thematically and melodically. It contains undoubtedly some of MONO's strongest songs ever, drawing on an array of influences from minimalist film score to vintage shoegaze. It is MONO at their absolute purest, executing an uncanny, unspoken dialogue with each other without the dozens of stringed instruments that have been so prominent throughout their catalog in recent years. The songs are also noticeably more efficient – there hasn't been a MONO full-length record that fit on a single slab of vinyl since 2003's One Step More And You Die – and the album benefits immeasurably from this streamlined approach. MONO have always been masters of telling compelling stories without words. But now they've proven they can do it without frills, too.

Guillermo Cides - Stick Bass (4)
Jonathan Barrett (ex-The Tangent) - Fretless Bass (7)
Steve Layton - Programming, and arrangements

Description/Reviews:

The context of the songs is largely unchanged from the Unitopia days; thought provoking and meaningful lyrics with an emphasis on the human condition, the state of the environment and how we as the human race arrived at where we are today. All sung with feeling and passion – a hallmark of all that is best in progressive music, but the music itself has taken on an edgier, grittier sound than that of Unitopia, which makes it quite breath-taking!
‘Water’ opens and ends with the sound of thunder and rain which leads into exquisitely middle- eastern flavours interspersing with a punchy orchestral chorus and featuring the unmistakable dulcet tones of Jon Anderson. The song progresses into a dramatic sequence with some heavy guitar riffs supplied by Matt.
The production is flawless, Mark’s voice is as impressive as ever, and the talent that these musicians combined possess is clearly apparent. ‘Water’ is a reminder of how we can take this precious fluid for granted; how it is getting harder to get (especially in Australia, where droughts are more frequent and prolonged with bushfires more violent and deadly with each passing summer) and yet, we still treat it with thoughtlessness instead of conservation.

Jerusalem "Black Horses"

Lynden Williams - vocals
Bob Cooke - guitars
Geoff Downes (Asia, Yes, Buggles) - keyboards
Nick D’Virgilio (Spocks Beard, BBT) - drums
Ashley Cutler - bass
Ollie Hannifan - guitars
Rachel Hall - violin

Description/Reviews:

"Puppet King" clearly shows off their prog tendencies, with Drury laying down plenty of synth & organ tones alongside Hannifan's blistering riffs. Williams still has a great voice, lending a bluesy touch to the title track and "Leopard Skin Pie" (complete with some soaring violin from Hall), almost sounding a bit like Jethro Tull legend Ian Anderson. "Shades of Blue" is like a meeting of Deep Purple & Kansas, as Downes' heavy Hammond organ saddles up next to Hannifan's heavy riffs and Hall's majestic violin in fine fashion, and "The Albatross" is a thumping blues rocker, reminiscent of Tull's early '90s material. Back to hard charging prog on the excellent "Surfing From Sydney to Marrakech", as Hannifan's crisp riffs provide the punch and Downes' Mellotron & Hammond the majesty, with Williams' catchy vocal melodies drawing the listener in even further. Easily one of the highlights of the album. "Smokestack Ammunition" is a thunderous heavy rocker in the Deep Purple/Uriah Heep vein, and another must hear track on Black Horses, and the lush, meditative "Eternity" takes things out in tranquil fashion, with Williams' gentle vocals supported by layers of keyboards and crisp drums from D'Virgilio.
Black Horses is indeed a very fine release, and even if you've never heard their heavy rocking 1972 debut, chances are if you like modern prog and '70s styled hard rock you'll get a lot of mileage out of this one. One miss here is the drab CD booklet design, which seems more geared towards an album for children than a hard rock & prog audience. (Pete Pardo at seaoftranquility.org)

On their debut album the band displays a relentless lust for experimenting. From the beautiful “The Last One” to the gritty “Electric Shock Therapy”, the band takes you on an unforgettable journey into worlds unknown; always with one foot in the danger zone. The music may be described as cinematic, dreamy, spacy, beautiful, ugly and dynamic with minimalistic elements and “over the top” full blown soundscapes. “Add some King Crimson, Black Sabbath, Richard Strauss and impressionist Claude Debussy and you have a pretty good picture of what it´s all about,” says bassist Jonas Reingold.

The music is presented here in continuous form and is cinematic by design. As in a film, scenes move backward and forward in time and space and characters appear and disappear without much by way of explanation. The scenes have been formed by slashing apart the forms of the original songs with which I started the project and reassembling them into this new form. It's *not* music looking for an imaginary film, but more like a combination of screenplay and music at the same time.

With
Plini - Guitar Solo on Ode to the Vulture

Description/Reviews:

In March of 2014 the Columbia, SC band took off to record two weeks in Florida at Audiohammer Studios with producer Eyal Levi, a studio and producer fit that couldn’t have been more perfect for the band. Levi’s death metal background and keen ear for music composition falls in line with Trees on Mars carefully constructed and melodically driven songs. Compositions that focus on intricate guitar work that always seems fitting for the song and never in a boastful strutting way.

The first half of the album plays aggressive and precise, with interweaving guitars heavily reliant on melody and structure. It’s this sense of melody that broadens the Trees on Mars audience outside of the metal umbrella. It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re listening through the album and get lost in the pure emotion of it all. They tend to lean away from abrasive and more towards clean and crisp tones and more comfortable western notes.

Description/Reviews:

“Lullabies in a Car Crash” feature six songs with a coherent and thematical composition. Bjørn’s soulful guitar playing and low-key vocals creates a rich listening experience. Although Bjørn as a guitarist have developed his own sound with a unique tone and his own technique over the years, the playing and tone are reminiscent of David Gilmour, Steven Rothery and Steven Wilson. As a singer this is the first time he takes the lead, normally doing the backing vocals in Airbag. His singing style is in the area of the mellow vocals of Tim Bowness and Nick Drake.

Line-up:

Lukas Häger: Guitar
Mikal Styrke: Drums

Description/Reviews:

”Grave”, ”machine” and ”excavator” - Gravmaskin is a play on the Swedish translations for these three words, and when listening to the trio's instrumental rock its moniker makes perfect sense. The music paints a picture of a ”grave machine” - a mechanical entity fueled by driving beats and haunting melodies, digging tombs in the airy forest, next to a roaring motorway. Something cold and mechanical married to nature and her cycles of life and death. Because at first glance, Gravmaskin's music might pull instant associations to classic Italian horror soundscapes and dreamy German psychedelia (the band cite Goblin, NEU! and Tangerine Dream as three of their main influences, alongside smoke, freeways and the Swedish nature reserve Hågadalen). But when looking further, descending over it is a funeral mist of something undeniably Scandinavian – that soul stripping melancholia present in Bathory and Bo Hansson alike – and a raw, jangly punk execution giving it groove, nerve and a speed-paced pulse.

The band's three key musical influences go some way to explaining King Nine's ambitious, expansive (but always accessible) scope: the electronica of Boards of Canada; the movie soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and John Carpenter; the melodicism and melancholia of Kid-A era Radiohead and Arcade Fire.
