“ØMNI” is a concept album, a set of science fiction short stories that take place at various places in time, simultaneously. The backbone of the plot is based on the idea that in 2046 an artificial intelligence system will change human perception and cognition. It is a system which will allow conscious communication between present and future human beings. Characters such as time travellers, cavemen, warriors, among others, help tell this story.

The album connects the concepts of previous albums (“Holy Land”, “Rebirth”, “Temple of Shadows”) to one main system, “ØMNI”, which in Latin means "everything." “ØMNI” fabricates an interconnectivity that shines light towards a universal truth: everything that has happened, led to what the band is today. “ØMNI” celebrates and unites the whole history of Angra to this exact, current moment.

Angra’s trademark formula, a Brazilian style mixed with classical music and heavy metal, is enhanced by different influences such as progressive rock, thrash metal, Latin music, djent, etc., which transforms the albums into a swirl of modern and familiar. The conjoined moods and dynamics put a special spin on the lyrics and therefore increase deep sense of immersion in the story.

Admittedly, “Artic Wind” serves as a seven-minute preview of the rest of the record. The song commences with a solitary guitar, offering its woeful articulation, one note at a time; but after the first minute, the group brings in the drums and the bass. The build here ruminates a bit too long, but there is an abrupt change that drives the track into a psychedelic trance, before busting into an intense, poignant solo.

Ola Kvernberg (Grand General ) - violin, viola, Hammond B3 organ, Vox Continental, harmonium, guitar, theremin, Taurus, drums, percussion
Øyvind Blomstrøm - electric guitar, baritone guitar, pedal steel guitar
Nikolai Hængsle (The National Bank) - electric bass
Daniel Buner Formo - Hammond B3 organ
Erik Nylander - drums, pandeiro, tambourine, quirky percussion
Hans Hulbækmo - djembe, bongos, tambourine, drums
Børge Fjordheim - drums, prepared autoharp

Three years after releasing the masterpiece The Mechanical Fair, Ola Kvernberg returns with a new magnificent, imaginative, rhythmic deluge of an album: Steamdome. The title of Kvernberg’s latest project was not chosen at random. Steamdome presents thoroughly percussive music. It lunges brutally ahead like a runaway train. As enthusiastic, surrealistic and swelling as Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns.
Steamdome changes track, and barrels along into a landscape where rhythmical patterns, beat and groove are the dominant elements. The Mechanical Fair was described as belonging to a “mutton western” genre, and this description is, if anything, even more appropriate now. With three of the country’s most innovative drummers on board, the bows, strings and resin have been replaced by sticks, metal and a variety of drums. Steamdome is seething with visual energy. The music winds its way through steep cliffs, far-ranging vistas, sharp curves, sheer drops and nocturnal landscapes where the only anchoring point is the suggestive rhythm of a train that never stops.

Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date: February 2, 2018

Toinen toista
Laulu sisaruksille
Tiedon kehtolaulu
Etsijän elinehto
Nurja puoli
Tony Björkman - guitar
Babak Issabeigloo - guitar, vocals
Juuso Jylhänlehto - drums
Ville Rohiola - Hammond, keyboards
Jonni Tanskanen - bass guitar

Malady’s eponymous album was a deserved underground hit, a beautifully realised piece of original Finnish progressive rock which had its roots very strongly in the sound of the early 70s. The second album Toinen toista goes deeper.
Composed and arranged as a collaborative piece by the band, Toinen toista has enough detail to keep one captivated for repeated listens. The music is glazed with the kind of homegrown sweetness only vintage Scandinavian Prog Rock can offer but its insides are complex, with layer upon layer of things to discover.

Total Time 42:03

Piotr Dobry - Guitars, Vocals, Synthesizers
Bartek Dobry - Guitars, Vocals, Synthesizers
Grzegorz Pawlowski - Bass
Robert Kulakowski - Drums

On III, Weedpecker’s third full-length, the first notes of the album already evoke a blissful and airy atmosphere, waves of guitar rolling over the listener until a deep bass, drums and mellotron set the tone for the trip to come. The atmosphere the band creates is offset by an interplay of heavy riffing, etherial vocals and progressive structures; like labelmates Elder, the band are fond of long, unpredictable songs with an increasingly progressive slant.

Further sidestepping entrapments of the stoner rock genre, III sees the band experimenting with light, colorful jams that remind the listener of Tame Impala or Morgan Delt. Moving seamlessly between styles and moods organically, it’s easy to get lost, only to find yourself emerged in a different world entirely.

Son is a tour de force of emotion, delicacy, passion, cohesion, and grief-stricken splendor, and listeners will undoubtedly get lost in its sentiments and patterns. Each piece takes its time to develop, using both conventional and orchestral textures, as well as a plethora of vulnerable honesty, to make its statements. This album is a life-affirming experience. Few other albums have ever matched its magnificent combinations.

Dai Kaht is a great debut album by a Finnish band deeply inspired by 1970s progressive rock and Zeuhl... Following Zeuhl tradition, the band members have created their own language, which they use in their songs. Although the band’s sound definitely draws a lot of ideas from Zeuhl, the sound is more rock oriented, featuring two guitar players; it’s less jazzy and operatic than Magma.

Total time: 41:34

Andy Briston - Guitar, vocals, keyboard, acoustic guitar
Andy Hibberd - Bass guitar
Martin Law - Drums, percussion
Iain Roddick - Saxophone

'Exit To The Death Lane' opens proceedings with a flurry of neo-psych guitars and crashing drums, all coming together to form that mythical 'wall of sound'. Muted vocal choruses and some superlative guitar work break through this wall and the whole feel changes into something...well...just incredibly psychedelic. It channels the 'Happenings' era Floyd and the spacey hustle of Hawkwind and yet remains firmly Psychic Lemon. 'Hey Droog!' is a monster - huge riffs and more muted vocals that sound almost choral herald moments of sheer psych is driven forward by pummelling drums (I swear Martin has 3 arms!) and throbbing basslines. It is heavy and yet remarkably absolute masterclass.

What do you get when you combine traveling around the globe and songwriting? When you put together progressive rock and acoustic folk, with a slight hint of pop? And what would happen if you would do this without the pressure of record labels, completely ignoring the fact that we divided this world into boxes and thus you can move freely whatever way you want to? Then you’ll get ‘a silent sound’.
‘Compass’ consists of 12 songs which tell the story of the journey of a man, traveling to fulfil his fathers’ last wish. To return to the place he once was born. On this journey he doesn’t only see the different surroundings and the beautiful nature, but he soon gets to know cities and all of her temptations, new people, cultures and all that the world has got to offer. Both positive and negative. ‘Compass’ is not only about the journey, which is possibly based on true events, but evenmore about discovering, about love, experiencing, accepting, deception and relief.

If the band’s name doesn’t give it away, Master Sword are a Legend of Zelda-themed act. While they are firmly rooted in traditional heavy metal and progressive rock/metal, the Zelda influences are equally worn on their sleeves through both the lyrical content and the melodies in each track.

Dominique Vantomme: Fender Rhodes Electric Piano, Piano, Mini Moog, Mellotron
Michel Delville (The Wrong Object; douBt; Machine Mass): Electric Guitar
Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Stick Men): Bass Guitar, Chapman Stick
Maxime Lenssens: Drums

The spontaneity and freshness of this sizzling, high-altitude set reflects the equally unpretentious manner in which the session itself came together. Tackling some decidedly hip musical sketches of Dominique Vantomme, the band is given full artistic liberty – and with all participants in top form, the resulting music weaves and winds its way across paths previously untrodden ... in stunning fashion, and with sure footing! In the truest MoonJune tradition, "Vegir" thumbs its nose at convention and showcases these seasoned veteran musicians at the top of their game: with the skill set, bravery and chutzpah to follow their instincts and, in the process, allow the music to seek out and ultimately capture its own form. It slinks; it growls; it stalks; it devours! It grooves; it stutters; it holds you in suspense, then explodes! (... think 'juggling chainsaws' in the sonic realm.

Paul Hamilton - violin

Rose Reidmiller Gowda - viola
Michael Gilber Ronstadt - cello, string arrangments

Kicking things off in typical fashion with wailing guitars, stellar harmonies and entrancing tempo changes, the album launches into a powerful opener of “Plaese Haalp.” While many have already heard the tune live over the course of the last few months, this time, listeners are introduced to triumphant strings, violins and cellos, helping to create a larger than life sound. Lyricism plays a key role, detailing inner emotions and exploring parallels between time, creating music and giving attention to other avenues in life. Eventually tempo slows down as Winderman’s roaring and impressive vocals take the reigns of explaining their reasoning behind the 2018 hiatus.

Bleeding into soft focus by way of a bed of Carpenter-esque synths and the soothing opening words of the album’s first narrator Leah Senior ..., the album’s first chapter, ‘Altered Beast 1-4’ aims straight up the jugular. A progged-out tetralogy conjuring the hectic hardcore thrust of last year’s Nonagon Infinity, it sees harmonica, synth, mellotron and a slew of shapeshifting rhythmic patterns congeal in a swirl that stems as much from the more cosmically inclined highpoints of Hawkwind and Amon Düül II as it does, say, Yes and Rush at their most insistent.
